About the Searle Canyon Red Beryl & Topaz Mine
Discover one of the world’s rarest gemstone localities — the Searle Canyon Red Beryl & Topaz Mine, located in Utah’s remote West Desert near the Thomas Range. This is an active, privately operated mine where guests can
dig for rare gemstones and minerals and keep everything you find at no extra charge.
Hiking & Physical Requirements
Important – Please Read Carefully
Access to the active dig areas at the Searle Canyon Mine requires an intermediate hike of approximately 1/4 (0.25) mile each way.
If you can not make the hike we have other options to book. Maynard’s red beryl & topaz mine requires no hike. This is a much better option for those who may struggle with a rugged hike.
- Terrain includes uneven ground, loose rock, and elevation changes
- Guests must be able to walk unassisted, carry personal gear, and navigate rugged desert conditions
This experience is NOT recommended for individuals who:
- Have difficulty hiking or walking moderate distances
- Have mobility limitations or physical disabilities
- Require mobility aids or assistance
This is a remote and physically demanding mining environment. All participants should be confident in their ability to safely hike in and out of the dig area.
Red Beryl (often called “red emerald”) is among the rarest gemstones on Earth and is highly prized by collectors worldwide. The mine is also known for producing exceptional Topaz and classic Utah mineral specimens, making this a true bucket‑list destination for rockhounds, mineral collectors, treasure hunters and adventure seekers alike.
What You Can Find at the Mine
Every dig is different, but guests may uncover:
- Red Beryl — one of the rarest gemstones in the world
- Topaz — classic Utah crystals
- Bixbyite — striking black metallic crystals
- Holfertite — rare Uranium silicate mineral named after John Holfert.
- Amethyst and associated minerals — adding variety and excitement to every dig
All material you collect is yours to keep.
