Discover one of Utah’s most exciting and productive mineral localities — the Solar Wind Bixbyite & Pink Topaz Mine, located in Utah’s remote West Desert near the Thomas Range. This is an active, privately operated mine where guests can dig for rare gemstones and minerals and keep everything they find at no extra charge.

The Solar Wind Mine is best known for producing exceptional Bixbyite crystals and vibrant Pink Topaz, along with a variety of associated minerals. It is a favorite destination for collectors, rockhounds, treasure hunters, and adventure seekers looking for a true mining experience in a rugged desert environment.

Access & Physical Requirements

✅ NO HIKING REQUIRED

With a proper 4-wheel-drive, high-clearance vehicle, guests are able to drive and park within approximately 100 feet of all active collecting areas.

  • No hiking is required to access the dig sites

  • Collecting areas are easily reached directly from designated parking spots

  • Guests must be able to walk short distances around uneven ground near the vehicles

This makes the Solar Wind Mine an excellent option for guests who prefer minimal walking or who may not be comfortable with rugged hikes required at other mine locations.

What You Can Find at the Mine

Every dig is different, but guests may uncover:

  • Bixbyite — classic black metallic crystals highly sought after by collectors

  • Pink Topaz — beautiful pastel to vivid pink crystals unique to this area

  • Pseudobrookite – black and grey metallic elongated crystals.
  • Other associated minerals such as: Hyalite Opal, Chalcedony, Fluorite & More.

All material you collect is yours to keep.

Tour & Dig Information

We offer tour options designed for all experience levels:

Guided VIP Tours

  • Full-day mining experience with expert guides

  • Instruction on tools, techniques, and productive dig areas

  • Typical hours: 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM

For your safety and proper instruction, all guests must be accompanied by our staff while on site.

Combo Mine Tours

Vehicle Requirements & Access

🚙 Proper vehicles are REQUIRED

  • 4×4 or AWD vehicle is REQUIRED

  • Minimum 8 inches of ground clearance recommended

  • Roads are unpaved and may be rough depending on conditions

With the proper vehicle, guests can park within ~100 feet of the collecting areas.

If you do not have an appropriate vehicle, shuttle options may be available upon request.

What to Bring

To make the most of your mining experience, we recommend bringing:

  • Rock hammer, chisels, screwdrivers, or digging tools

  • Buckets or containers for collecting specimens

  • Gloves, sturdy footwear, and sun protection

  • Plenty of water, snacks, and lunch

🪣 Screens are available FREE on site, but guests should plan to be self-sufficient.

  • Nearest Town: Delta, Utah (approximately 1 hour away)

  • Camping: Primitive camping available nearby

  • Facilities: Limited; portable toilets or privacy tents may be provided at parking areas
